Our policy
The cement and concrete production has always been closely related to the environment. This important fact drove Carthage Cement in implementing an environmental policy based on the following principles:
- Taking care of the environment in which it operates in order to protect the environment and its natural resources.
- Incorporating environmental considerations into its industrial strategy and development plans
Carthage Cement provides regularly and openly all relevant information on its environmental measures. We seek to maintain dialogue on this subject with our staff, as well as with public opinion and the authorities.
Our goals
In accordance with the general policy of our environmental management company, the main objectives have been set for the resulting process and are as follows:
- Compliance with environmental legal requirements
- Rationalization of the consumption of raw materials, fuels
- Monitoring and reduction of dust and GHG Emissions
- Control and rationalization of water and energy consumption
- Prevention of environmental emergencies
- Protection and rehabilitation of exploitation sites
- Training of technical and management personnel to increase their competence in the management of the integrated management system.
- Implement an integrated management system in compliance with ISO 9001 & ISO 14000 standards and continually improve it.
Towards an industrial ecology?
Cement is essential to the development of our society, but the manufacturing process has significant environmental impacts.
In order to realize the company's environmental policy and achieve its goals, Carthage Cement's general direction translates this fact through the purchase of environmentally friendly equipment that meets environmental requirements that are:
Reduction of CO2 emissions
The building materials sector contributes significantly to CO2 emissions; Particularly through cement manufacturing which accounts for some 5% of global emissions. 60% comes from the decarbonisation process and 40% from the combustion one.
In order to be a part of an international effort to reduce CO2 emissions, Carthage Cement will manufacture cement compounds according to the new current standards.
Local atmospheric emissions and impact
Production sites are potential sources of various pollutant gases that can have a bad health impact. Among these gases, we can find the nitrogen oxides (NOx), the sulfur (Sox) and dust. To control these emissions, Carthage Cement is committed to reach a maximum of 10 mg of dust at the level of all chimneys by:
- Adopting a bag filter system
- Continuous monitoring of emissions through the installation of opacity test measures
- Using a Nox Low Burner
Conservation and preservation of water
The whole installed production equipment is completely air-cooled and there is no water consumption.
